I don’t read. So I got a Kobo.
This is not the story of a woman who wanted everything, including those things she didn’t have a need for. Nope. Not at all. It’s a story about a woman who knew she was not doing herself any favors by not making time for herself. Making time pick up a book, remove herself from reality and fall into deep into a rabbit hole of make believe.
I have not read a book since grade school. Not a statement I’m proud to admit. Changed that, by getting a Kobo and diving in head first. I took a challenge, because that’s how we roll. A 7-day reading challenge with kobo and read for 7-days straight documenting my journey (check it out on the Kobo Blog). YOU GUYS! It was sorta’ life changing. Besides giving me time away from work, house work and reality TV, it gave me real life lol’s, the excitment of wonder and a straight-up reality check.
I started myself out with an array of novels. God only knows what kind of books I enjoy. I don’t know how many times I’ve been asked ” what kind of novels are you into?”. GOODNESS ME! I have no idea, if we went off of the last books I read and enjoyed, we’ll have to go with Goosebumps by R.L. Stine. Clearly that list needed updating.
Here are the books I started with;
- The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson
- I Just Want to PEE Alone by Jenn Mann
- Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella
- Gangsta Granny by David Walliams
- Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling
- Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder by Joanne Fluke
Now clearly I did not read them all in 7-days (You guys! Remember grade school? R.L. Stine?). I did however dive into a few that gave me a better idea of the type of novel I like. And because the Kobo Aura ONE is awesome, I’m going to share with you exactly how far I’ve gone into each. Then I’m going to tell you what I thought.
28% into I Just Want to PEE Alone
26% into Confessions of a Shopaholic and;
52% into Gangsta Granny.
Here is my take. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the book I Just Want to PEE Alone to anyone who had, is going to have, or is raising a baby. Not only did I choke on my drink while reading the ridiculously funny relatable stories, but it gave me some perspective on Motherhood. Reminded that I am not alone, these “are you kidding me” moments happen to everyone and rather than crying when you forget to put shoes on your baby before going to the park after a rather trying morning, you should laugh at the moment. It’s a great story to tell, better yet, take a selfie to remember the moment too.
Confessions of a Shopaholic came recommended to me from someone who “knows me”. She felt this book, a combination of humor, romance and SHOPPING would be a great fit for me. I sorta’ think she knows what she’s talking about. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book for someone who is looking for a light, easy and fun read. A way to take themselves out of reality, land their mind in a story of over-spending, over-thinking and justifying one-more-thing with “because I’m worth it”. I am loving this novel and am certain that I will contiune on in this series.
And finally, Gangsta Granny. Would I recommend this book? I would love nothing more than to as it really is a brilliant book. But in my case I DO NOT RECOMMEND it.
I chose this book as it seemed like a fun read to get into with Sofia. Nothing like a little 20-minute read-sesh before bed with your mama. Taking turns reading one page at a time. It started out peachy, both giggling at the name-calling, the cabbage eating granny and of course the gas-passing references but then came a twist. I never looked into how the book ends. Not that one would normally ruin the ending before starting a novel. But this time it was different. This time I would need to be equip for all the emotions that come with a unexpected ending or plot twist. I sensed it was coming about 50% of the way through and luckily have avoided finishing it.
Without ruining it for anybody, I’m just going to say, I thank our busy schedule, the end of the school year, ballet and ukulele recitials for not having to deal with this one. Not right now anyway. Summer Break is coming, something tells me she’s going to wan’t to finish it. #holdme
I am loving my new Kobo Aura ONE. It’s not something I thought I would ever own given my reading track record you guys. But now that I have one, I am finding myself carving out time to read. Skipping the laundry to curl up and get through “just one more chapter” or putting the girls to bed early so that I can sneak in an extra 25 minutes to read alone. Coming from someone who never has spare time. Or someone who very rarely makes time for themselves. I’d say getting the Kobo Aura ONE was a great idea. Genius in fact!
Wished I had it on our Seattle Road Trip, or even last month when I spent 40 minutes in the waiting room at the doctors office. Let’s just say I’m thankful to have it now, that and trying to figure out the PERFECT READ for our upcoming trip to Disneyland. It’s about a 2.5 hour flights to Anaheim, and based on my reading speed through Kobo I should be able to get through a bookany book recommendations?

I am glad that you are able to enjoy reading now, despite not reading for a long time. I loved the R. L Stine books too when I was a kid though! I used to read novels in high school and even college for required readings, but now I am more into non-fiction books. I haven’t read a whole book (aside from the Bible) in a while, but would love to get into reading again. The only problem for me is that often times I will get sleepy from reading just several chapters.
