Feature: Mole Hill Miracle(-Gro) +GIVEAWAY

IMG_1324

Mole hills are a frequent occurrence in this little neighborhood of ours, and over the course of the 7 years we’ve called this house our home, we’ve found some super creative ways to evict these guys from our yard (in the nicest way possible). The most successful route has been lawn sensors (think noisy outdoor solar light) which make a low beeping noise every 60 seconds. They send a signal between the two posts located at either side of your lawn and with their underground signals keep the moles from looking to your yard as great real estate. It worked for a good 3 years until they found our backyard and little mole homes were going up quicker than the booming Vancouver condo market.

I’m happy to say we’ve successfully evicted our backyard tenants, but are now left with the dirty task of having to fix all the hills left behind in the whole ordeal. Our grass currently resembles a spotty mess and it needs to be fixed, but with the number of patches we have to fill we were worried it would be hard to find a product that would not only grow successfully in any area of our lawn, sunny areas or shaded, but also one that would create a flawless seam between old grass and new.

We researched and hunted down a product that we felt would get us from patchy mess to a beautiful lawn, choosing Scotts® ez Seed® (1-0-0).We found it, along with Scotts® ez Seed® Dog Spot Repair that we plan on using on a need-to-need basis for our front lawn (hello! wandering neighborhood dogs). Finding both products locally quite easily, I took a little extra time to narrow down where we would buy it at the best price. Home Depot happened to be having a sale a few weekends ago and it’s where we bought both bottles $2 cheaper than anywhere else I could find (other locations we found it sold at were Canadian Tire, Rona, Walmart, Lowes and even The Great Canadian Superstore).

We prepped the spots as the instructions had directed, removing any dead grass and loosening up hard soil, in our case it was simply spreading out the mound of dirt. We then applied Scotts® ez Seed® (1-0-0) to the patch leaving behind a 1/8″ layer of mix until it was mostly covered, and then gave it a good healthy watering (on the Scotts website it says: A deep and thorough initial watering is the key to success. Gently water the area until Scotts® EZ Seed® is completely saturated and no more water is being absorbed; mixture will turn dark brown, this may take several minutes. Avoid pooling water. When mixture begins to turn light brown, it’s time to water again.). After these simple steps, we watched, waited and re-watered when it was needed.

Sammy and I couldn’t help but laugh at the fact that the yard was beginning to look a whole lot like a scene from the classic and ever so hilarious 1980’s Bill Murphy movie Caddyshack. We suspect that the moles thoroughly enjoyed their time spent in our yard (as it shows) just as the gofer did on the Caddyshack course.

We’re glad to see that the mole will be doing his happy-dance elsewhere, anywhere but our yard is fine by us, he has our blessings.

…and because we read that Scotts® ez Seed® grows everywhere and anywhere you put it, we thought to put it to the test in true Caddyshack form because heck! we already went all out with this golfer getup and all, it only makes logical sense!

It states that Scotts® ez Seed® can be grown literally anywhere, from full sun to full shade and even in your dark and dingy unfinished basement (the proof is in the video people). We opted to put it to the real test, growing grass in a highly unlikely place and since seeing such success in our backyard mole hill community, we decided to continue on our path of Caddyshack craziness and attempt growing grass on a golf hat. The verdict…

I guess it’s safe to say Scotts is no liar, this stuff really does grow anywhere you put it. I say give it a try, grow some grass someplace unlikely with Scotts® ez Seed® and play along in their #EZSeed #IGrewIt competition having your chance at winning a $300 Ikea gift card! I know Sammy and I will be keeping a few of these bottles around for when the moment calls, I can see it coming in handy with our upcoming backyard renovations. Not to say I foresee Sammy making any mistakes and needing a little help making good of a grass mishap, but hey! it never hurts to have a back-up plan, am I right?

The online world is already having tons of fun with this, and I hear some fellow competitors of mine, Buzz Bishops from Dad Camp and Leanne Shirtliffe from Ironic Mom are getting a head start with things too. Nothing like a good healthy competition to heat things up between perfect online strangers. Let’s do this Buzz and Leanne, are you ready for this?

How long did it take to grow? Our lawn has been demolished by our dogs, I’ve been looking for a solution!

    • Tairalyn says:

Hi Sandra, it took us about 5 days to start to see growth and it took about 2 weeks to see complete growth that we could run over with the lawn mowing and work into the rest of the lawn. It’s flawless too! They also have, which I noticed, was a specific one for dog burns on the lawn, I’m not sure if that’s what you mean or if you mean they dig up the lawn. Either way there are options, magical options with the Scotts ezSeed line, I promise! You will be so happy!

  7. Judy Cowan says:

I get my hands dirty, I actually really enjoy doing it so it is not a chore for me. I can’t wait until the weather gets nice and I can get outside in the gardens, cutting grass etc.

  12. nicolthepickle says:

I bring the cold refreshments. Raspberry lemonade anyone?

  13. nicolthepickle says:

Actually I can vouch for how easy this stuff is to grow. We needed to seed a lot of lawn, and someone *coff* bought a store brand kind and it didn’t grow well at all so we went back and got Miracle Grow and it grew so lush and thick.

  14. I get my hands really dirty doing work around the yard.

  15. I LOVE ♥ puttering around the yard getting things in order. Hubby does the mowing of the lawn but I get down & dirty rearranging perennials, clearing out old plants & making sure everything in the yard is up to date. Nothing like being outside as I find it brings me tons of pleasure, fresh air & a sense of peace. Its a quiet time for me puttering around enjoying nature at its best.

Thanks @Littlemissmama.com for the lovely chance ♥

  16. I like to get my hands dirty but I’m so much better with the refreshments 🙂
