I think we can all agree that a well-done before and after motivates us, has us dreaming about our own spaces, makes us feel all the feelings! No?
I mean seeing a space go from lackluster to hosting perfection in not only a short time frame but on a budget, those are my kinda makeovers; an affordable quick overhaul which we’ve been calling a Miracle(-Gro) Makeover. It’s taken us about 4 weeks and just over $500 to complete, considering the size of our space and the blank canvas we had, it needed a lot of love, but had huge potential. Think dreamy lighting, romantic foliage and flowers that perfume the air as you relax the evening away fireside. That’s exactly what we got (and more) after all our love, dedication and hard work we put into it.
The ground roots were set with a simple vision, soft lighting above with baskets and barrels of plants below. I truly feel that a successful outdoor space consists perfectly of combining these two things; inside luxuries in a lush green outdoor space. Think over-sized pillows and cozy knit blankets tucked away in between logs, greenery and potted flowers; the perfect combination of outdoor meets in. Today I want to share with you exactly how we concreted out ideas by starting off with the “greenery”.
Scotts Miracle-Gro products used for this overhaul:
- Scotts® ez Seed® (1-0-0) :: we were nervous about growing grass atop a bed of concrete (around each cedar post we installed) so we knew we had to go for a guarantee. We used the Scotts ez Seed to grow grass at the base of each post. Sprinkled the 3-in-1 mix (mulch, seed and fertilizer), watered it well and watched the magic happen.
- Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix :: our original plan was to use Scotts Premium Garden Soil however after further investigation and helpful advice from one of the Scotts pro’s, we found out that this soil is for in-ground gardens, not potted plants. We used Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix for all the pots and hanging baskets on our patio for reasons I just have to explain, it’s actually really cool. This potting soil has an AquaCoir® technology which allows the soil to hold 33% more water than regular potting mix and releases it as the roots need it. We knew this would be the best way to start off our plants considering the heat we’ve been having here in Vancouver early on this Summer and also this will give us a great sense of relief when we are away on vacation sporadically this summer.
- Miracle-Gro® Shake ‘n Feed® All Purpose Continuous Release Plant Food :: because bigger is better! Who doesn’t want to see their flowers and plants grow bigger than the traditional size? Here is how we looked at it, a bigger more luscious plant means it takes up more space in the pot which in turn means less money spent on an abundance of filler plants. It’s super easy to use, and you only have to reapply once every 4 months during the growing season! (which amounts to about 1x/year, since our growing season is notoriously short).
- Scotts® Outdoor Cleaner Plus OxiClean™ Ready to Use :: we used this product for 2 reasons; 1. we had stains on the concrete from pots that had lived there long before, and 2. we needed to find a cleaner that was not only safe for the plants and grass we would be spraying near but also safe for the concrete. We wanted it cleaned, but cleaned right, and that’s exactly what we found in Scotts Outdoor Cleaner.
Shall we take a moment to remember what the space looked like;
Visiting all the little moments that made this overhaul a complete Miracle(-Gro);
Now to show you how the entire thing turned out, with details;
I can’t wait to go more into detail on just how we did everything. I’m working on a string of DIY posts in the coming weeks to show you exactly how we got the space from before to after. From the cedar posts we designed and installed, to purchasing and putting up the string lights, to the fun seating we chose for around the fireplace, and all the little details in between. Stay tuned for this on the site and shared on all our social accounts soon!
Until then, continue dreaming up your own outdoor space, starting with a great foundation of lighting and outdoor plants!
Disclosure :: This post is sponsored by Scotts Miracle-Gro, however all opinions are my own. As you can clearly see we not only love the products Scotts makes but so do our plants.

I am in love with it, love the two seating options and it’s no doubt your plants love the Miracle For, love that!

Thanks Codi! I can’t take any credit for the stumps, other than hunting them down on craigslist. LOL The husband drove out there solo, in a VW rabbit and picked them all up curbside himself. He’s a BEAST!
