I am by no means a connoisseur of essential oils, in fact, I would call myself the newest of newbies. I have always been intrigued by the thought of using essential oils both in my home, and into my family’s lives and daily routine but have always had too much on my plate to give it the attention I feel it needs, and deserves. A great friend of mine Jen, who also blogs {mama. papa. bubba}, is an avid daily user of essential oils. She recently shared her views on her 15 favorite uses for essential oils on the Moments in Mommyland blog and this is what really tipped the priority list for me. I needed to make a change and give essential oils my undivided attention. AND SO I DID!
Over the Holidays, we all fell ill, all at different times and severities, because of course. This time however, I’m embarrassed to say I was a wee bit giddy about treating some of our symptoms with my new found oil love. Don’t get me wrong I was not happy that we were under the weather, missing holiday events, and loosing sleep, just excited to get the chance to test and share some recipes from a first-person point of view. With the help of my doTERRA Home Essential Kit, I concocted and tried a cough suppressant for little people, and a energy booster for the whole family, an cool-your-jets relaxer for the babe, and even tested it out with skin blemishes. Here’s how it all turned out:
Cough Suppressant {original recipe}
Using all doTERRA oils, I mixed the following with 2 tbsp of organic Coconut Oil; 4 drops On Guard, 2 drops Oregano, 2 drops Melaleuca, 3 drops Lemon, and 2 drops Frankincense. I applied this, topically to Sofia’s spine and the bottoms of her feet each night to help with getting a good nights rest. I found this did relieve the cough, did not completely remove our evening of it, but no doubt it was better, and more sleep was gained because of it.
*as the original recipe suggests the recipe has not been reported used on children under 18 months, and naturally to be caucious of using any oils on your children. always, always, use a carrier oil {like coconut oil} when putting essential oils on your child and test a small area first.
Energy Boost
Using our petal diffuser, I filled it with to the marked spot with distilled water and dropped in 10 drops of doTERRA’s lemon oil each morning. This my friends is a sure fire way to shake out your morning groggies or even an afternoon slump. I felt so reguvinated just after a few minutes of inhaling the vapors. Our morning cartoon session I noticed were cut short on the days I did this, we were all eager and ready to start our days thanks to the energy boost from the lemon oil. Who knew?! Since then I’ve also used it late in the evenings when I have work that will take me through the night. It’s really my life saver these days.
Cool-Your-Jets Kid
Using our petal diffuser again, about 30 minutes before bed I will fill the petal with distilled water and about 4 drops of lavender. I will let it vapor into the air while we wind down at night usually in our living room, and without any struggle, our evening bedtime routines are hands down tear free, I may even say painless.
*my girlfriend jen, also suggested making a little spray bottle filled with distilled water and a few drops of lavender oil to leave bedside in sofia’s room. if she ever wakes in the middle of the night, misting a bit of this magic potion on her pillow and sheets will do the trick in easing her back into a solid sleep {she uses this with her daughter, gracen}. luckily i have not had to try this, but you’d better believe it’s ready to go come the time.
Blemish Buster
After washing my face clean, using doTERRA’s Melaleuca, also known as Tea Tree oil, I take a q-tip and add a drop to the tip of it, I then dab it on the area that is blemished. Come morning if the spot it not totally a thing of the past, it’s well on it’s way to being old news. This may be one of my most favorite personal uses thus far. Who likes a zit anyways, BAH!
These are just 4 ways I have started using my doTERRA Essential Oils, however I know the world, and pinterest is full of other amazing ways you can incorporate them into your daily lives. I’m about a year in. I consider myself a pro novice. It started with a love for On Guard. Hard to pin down a favorite, but I’ll share an accidental use I stumbled on. I had been diffusing lime. For bedtime reading, I added a couple drops of Frankincense. Instant aphrodisiac out of the blue! Thought maybe it was random, tried it again, same result. Thank me later :))
