I read somewhere that a Family Routine is crucial for a happy home. I don’t disagree.
This past weekend I sat down to put together our Fall Family Routine and how I’d like it to look. Although, don’t be fooled, I’m not always this organized. I still show up to school drop off in sweats and miss parent teacher interviews. However, the article I read just made me sit, think and take action.
The weather is cooling off, jackets are coming out, and rain boots are hitting the shelves. I think it’s fairly clear, Fall is well on its way.
Our Family Routine over the Summer was far from scheduled. It was more about having fun, letting loose and staying up way past our bedtimes. Since school has started and life is slowly getting back to regular programming, I’m excited about the routine again. I don’t know about your family, but ours craves it.
This is the first time I’ve actually sat down to put some serious thought into our Family Routine. In general, I’m set to autopilot and just steam right through. I want things to be different this year. I want to live in the moment and make sure our family is making the most of our time together this Fall. Because sooner or later, Winter hits and we begin the stir-crazy cycle of being stuck inside most days annoying one another.
Last week we made our families Fall Bucket List to ensure we do all the pumpkin spice things imaginable; check it out here! I researched high and low on what was available in Vancouver to see and do this fall for families. I think we can actually do it. With the setting of a good solid Family Routine, this will ensure we make it through the list before snow falls and we hunker down indoors as one big crazy family.
Our Fall Family Routine;
GET OUTSIDE & STAY ACTIVE
Our Vancouver weather is very much like my emotions the week leading up to a family vacation. One day the sun is shining, the next I’m waking to snow falling; it’s a rollercoaster ride. I want to ensure our family is making the most of the nice weather. Think after-dinner walks, outdoor apple picking, and visiting the pumpkin patch.
WHAT MY FAMILY WILL NEED: A good runner that fits including a quality insole like the Dr. Scholl’s Massaging Gel Insoles, rain boots that actually work in keeping our feet dry (yes, we’ve learnt the hard way), warm waterproof coats for everyone, and above all (and very much Canadian) toques.
MORNING ROUTINE IN PLACE
All things considered, if I have anything to thank for my sanity at the end of a day, it’s establishing a morning routine. Waking up and having to do anything much past brewing a cuppa tea is not my strong suit. It’s why making a gameplan with the family on how our mornings will flow is important. From who feeds the cat, to who makes breakfast, packs lunches and to who feeds me caffeine. Every job is crucial, in particular the task of who ensures I have caffeine
WHAT MY FAMILY WILL NEED: A plan in motion on how our mornings will go here on out. As well as a refill on the Cream of Earl Grey . Equally important to the plan.
NIGHT ROUTINE SET
I’m a night owl to say in the very least. The moment that sun starts to go down, and bedtime routines are underway I get my second wind. Given that I know I’ll get some quiet time, or quite possibly because I know all the greatness waiting for me on Netflix. Either way, it’s important everyone is on the same page for bedtime routines and who gets to control the TV remote.
WHAT MY FAMILY WILL NEED: An agreement on a proper bedtime for a 7 and 2 year old, all things considered (stall tactics). A lifetime supply of Crayola’s Bath Drops (the girls just discovered mixing colors) and ALEVE Nighttime because I’m no longer kidding myself, I know I will push each day beyond my means. I’m going to need the help at night.
FAMILY NIGHTS PLANS
In short, from a kids point of view, Fall means leaf pressing, candle making, game playing and pumpkin seed roasting. Carving time out for time together in our Family Routine is for the most part just as important as making one. I’m setting aside time each week for us to just be. Play a game, make a craft, bake, color, paint. Subsequently, I foresee some serious crafting going on this Fall, that and cozy indoor movie nights ahead of us.
WHAT MY FAMILY WILL NEED: If you ask me, a trip to Michaels Crafts and Bulk Barn is in order. But ask Sammy and he’ll say my craft bin is over flowing with supplies, the cupboards couldn’t handle another kind of baking flour and apparently Netflix has pleny of options when it comes to family movies. Always raining on my parade.
Tell me, does your family have a routine they follow? Does it change seasonally? I would love to hear some of your Family Routines, including any hacks you’ve found that work. I may or may not need all the help I can get to see out these grand plans.
